Understanding Trauma & PTSD
Past events still stuck in your nervous system — hypervigilance, avoidance, flashbacks.
Trauma-informed therapy (EMDR, IFS, somatic, and CBT-based approaches) helps reprocess stuck material. We work at your pace, with psychiatric support available when symptoms demand it. Safety and stabilization come first.
How it shows up
After an overwhelming event, the nervous system can stay stuck in response mode — hypervigilance, flashbacks, avoidance, numbness, and trouble sleeping. The threat is over, but your body hasn't gotten the message.
What's driving it
Trauma lives in the survival brain, below the reasoning brain, which is why knowing you're safe doesn't make you feel safe. Effective treatment works with the system — EMDR, somatic, and trauma-focused CBT — at your pace, with psychiatric support when symptoms demand it.
When to seek help
If weeks or months after an event you're still avoiding, on guard, or reliving it, or if it's affecting sleep and relationships, reach out. Safety and stabilization come first, but you don't have to white-knuckle this alone.
The evidence
Roughly 6% of U.S. adults will experience PTSD in their lifetime; trauma-focused therapies are the best-evidenced intervention.
